They Live
This week on 3Amoviegos, Ian, Martyn & Joe ride again, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper & Keith David have what seems to be the longest fight in cinema history, and John Carpenter describes 2015 pretty accurately for 1988, in They Live.
Roddy Piper stars as Nada, a drifter who, after befriending Frank (Keith David) notices some strange activity in and around a local shantytown soup kitchen, including constant TV signal hacking by a warning to everyone about those in power. After a midnight police raid of the shantytown and nearby church building, Nada finds a box of sunglasses that have the ability to see through disguises and reveals subliminal totalitarian commands in all media, and that many people around us are actually humanoid aliens with skull-like faces.
Then, he decides to chew bubble gum…and kick some ass.
After escaping with slightly less than compliant Holly (Meg Foster) and coming off as a complete nutter who babbles on about hidden messages and people, he gets knocked out a window and left to fend for himself. After Frank meets up with Nada to give him his paycheck, the previously mentioned fight occurs. Once Frank’s eyes are open, he and Nada meet up with a band of rebels, figure out what the alien being are after, and teleport to the source of the camouflaging alien signal; The local Cable news station, which is where Holly works.
Everything culminates in a gunfight to destroy the signal at the top of the tower, along with Martyn’s disdain for the selfie stick.
